Looking back at the stats in 2009, destination weddings were a big hit. The number of Albertans who booked a destination wedding was up by 9%.
Over 29,000 people in Western Canada booked group vacations, effectively combining their wedding and honeymoon's in 2009 to experience a WEDDINGMOON!! (This is the combined sales of Westjet Vacations, Air Canada Vacations and Air Transat Holidays).
Top choices for destination weddings in 2009 were the Mayan Riviera and Punta Cana with Cuba and Jamaica tied for third place.
This is not a shock at all. With the average cost of a wedding in Canada at about $28,000 a destination wedding can make perfect sense. It is noted that weddings in large Canadian cities is even more expensive than the average - just look at the costs to rent space on a Saturday in July for your wedding in Calgary!
A wedding abroad also gives you the opportunity to invite your closest friends and family instead of having a large guestlist at home and to combine your wedding and honeymoon. It can be more of an intimate experience.
